A WEEKEND in Brighton will set a visitor back £237, a new survey shows.

TripAdvisor ranked Brighton 14th out of 20 surveyed cities for a short break.

The travel website compared the cost of two people staying for one-night in a four-star hotel in the month of August, with the overall figure including a pre-meal cocktail, a meal out and a short taxi ride.

York, Bath, Oxford, London, Cambridge and Edinburgh were more expensive than Brighton – with the Scottish city being the most expensive at £331. Sheffield has taken over as best-value city break destination.

I hate to point out that, as lovely as I'm sure parts of Sheffield are, it isn't a tourist destination, and that is reflected in the costs.

I suspect that Grimsby would be even better 'value' than Sheffield, followed by Luton.

I'd have to disagree - there are many things to do and see in Sheffield and the surrounding area. It has excellent transport links and park-and-ride facilities including the super-trams to get you into the city centre are superb. All it lacks, IMHO, is a seafront ;)

Did this survey take into account the cost of car parking? Because if you bring your car, sleep rough on a park bench and forage for waste food in bins you would still probably be pushed!
