A man and a woman have been arrested by police investigating the theft of duty free items from Gatwick Airport.

Shortly after 6am officers from Sussex Police running an operation into thefts at the airport stopped the two Gatwick workers after both were seen acting suspiciously.

When officers searched bags being carried by the man and woman they recovered sealed bottles of perfume and other duty free items. A search is also being carried out at a home in Crawley.

The 22-year-old man and 46-year-old woman, both from Crawley, are both in custody being questioned on suspicion of theft. Both work for a contractor based at the airport, not the site's owner Gatwick Airport Limited.

Detective Inspector Andy Richardson said: "These arrests are part of a long-running investigation into the theft of duty free goods from the airport.

"There is no suggestion that passengers have been targeted and today's arrests are not linked to previous operations aimed at catching airport workers who might be committing thefts there.

"We are working with Gatwick Airport Limited and airline operators to tackle the issue of theft and to catch those responsible."
