People who falsely claim 25% off council tax given two weeks to confess

First published in News

Residents who wrongly claim up to 25% off their council tax bills have a two week amnesty to confess.

Councils across East Sussex are joining forces to review the number of residents who may wrongly claim a discount. Prior to the review starting next month of 83,000 East Sussex taxpayers, residents are being encouraged to come forward.

The partnership review will examine who is claiming the single person discount which saves a band D ratepayer £400 a year.

Reviews over the past three years have reduced the number of single person discounts by more than 7% leading to an extra £2.1 million in tax payments.

Councillor Peter Chowney, deputy leader of Hastings Borough Council, said: “This review is aimed at protecting the public purse by tackling payments that are vulnerable to fraudulent claims.

“These claims cost councils thousands of pounds a year and affects services.”

Residents can come forward without fear of penalty until September 12.

It's a good idea but is it widely enough publicised ? I only read this by chance! Is it being announced on local TV etc. Then, if poeople are still caught they should come down like a ton of bricks.

But will those who have wrongly claimed for years be obliged to repay the wrongly claimed benefit? Hmm, food for thought imho

That's all good. But I thought if a discount letter was signed as a positive response you couldn't legally accuse residence as liars .... Let's hope this is not just a whim and then find the resources are not available to update the Council records. How far will the disregards get back dated. 1 year or 5 years ?? Or even back to the start date of the accounts ?? Not going to recover any backdated money but may reflect a change to this year and coming years !!

Should imagine if any resident comes forward and amends their records then the amended date may not be the honest date .....

Yes, but it WILL put an end to further false claims.
