Firefighters were kept busy in the early hours of this morning by a string of arson attacks.

At 4.50am, two Ford transit vans were deliberately set alight on Carden Hill near the junction to Carden Avenue in Brighton.

The windows of the vans were smashed and the front seats were torched.

One of the two vans were completely destroyed, but firefighters from Preston Circus Fire Station were able to save the second van and only the passenger seat was damaged.

Earlier on in the morning, a mattress went up in flames in West Street, Brighton, near the TSB bank at about 2.30am.

This is being treated as arson, but police were able to extinguish the blaze before firefighters arrived at the scene.

And at 1am, firefighters were called to a fire on the seafront opposite the Grand hotel in Brighton where a bin was on fire.

It is not known whether this was set alight deliberately or accidentally.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Sussex Police on 101.

It is not known whether the three incidents are being linked.
