BRIGHTON and Hove residents will soon have to flex their fingers a bit more before making local phone calls.

From October 1, the full 01273 dialling code will need to be dialled on every call - even from within the area.

Telecommunications regulator Ofcom is introducing the new system because of the growing demand for phone numbers in the area, which also covers Barcombe, Glynde, Hassocks, Henfield, Hurstpierpoint, Lewes, Newhaven, Peacehaven, Plumpton, Poynings, Ringmer, Rottingdean, Shoreham and Southwick.

By always using the code, phone companies will be able to issue new numbers beginning with 0 or 1.

People have been urged to start getting into the habit of using the code as calls will not be able to connect without it after September 30.
