JUNIOR tennis player Sonay Kartal has bagged the Nike Junior National Tennis Championships 12U Girls Singles title.

The Brighton youngster cruised to a 6-4 victory against Bromley’s Emma Raducanu at the West Hants Tennis Centre.

Speaking after her straight sets win, Sonay said: “I started off slow and turned it around in the second set.

“I’m really pleased to win because Emma’s beaten me three or four times now, so it feels good to have played so well today.

“I have an extra season to play in 12U, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Tournament director Shanti Patel, said: “The Nike Junior Nationals are the highest level of domestic competition for any British junior player.

“The standard of competition is always high and offers a great opportunity for players to test their abilities against the very best in their age group in the country.

“The Nike Junior Tennis Championships are the highest level competition for all juniors and the pinnacle of the summer domestic calendar.

“The tournament features more than 250 players across four age groups and is a showcase for British tennis and the best junior talent in the country.”

Having run for over 100 years, the tournament has an illustrious line of past winners including Andy Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman, Elena Baltacha, and Anne Keothavong.
