A SPORTING icon is heading to Sussex to talk about coming out as gay.

Wales and Lions legend Gareth Thomas will be at The Old Market in Brighton to talk about his book Proud: My Autobiography on September 21.

The man affectionately known as Alfie racked up 100 international caps during a stellar career, but the guilt of hiding his sexuality almost drove him to suicide.

In his conversation with his co-writer Michael Calvin he will give an insight into how the only place he felt he could be himself was on a rugby field.

Tickets are available from www.theoldmarket.com or by calling the box office on 01273 201 801.

If he was that much of a man, he'd have come out years ago.

At the age of 35, when his career was about to end.

What a shame he kept that from his wife.

"And if anyone dared to suggest he was anything other than 100 per cent straight, Gareth 'Alfie' Thomas was prepared to make them see the error of their ways. With his fists, if necessary."

So he'd punch anyone who had spotted what he was.

What an all-round nice guy.......not!
