A POPULAR bar and nightclub will close after calls from an MP and council leader to revoke its licence.

CuBar in Preston Street, Brighton, will shut after complaints about late-night noise and antisocial behaviour.

MP for Brighton Pavilion Caroline Lucas and Brighton and Hove City Council leader Jason Kitcat were the latest people to write to licensing chiefs in a bid to have the venueā€™s licence revoked.

The Green Party politiciansā€™ letters highlighted complaints about noise nuisance, fights and ā€œother undesirable behaviourā€, which ā€œharms residentsā€™ quality of lifeā€.

Shared licence Sophia Papanicolaou, tenant and manager at CuBar, said the venue did not have its own licence but instead shared a licence belonging to West Beach Hotel.

She attended a licence review hearing at Hove Town Hall yesterday to see how licensing bosses would deal with the complaints, bearing in mind the ā€œcomplicated nature of the shared licence with the hotelā€.

But during the hearing a West Beach Hotel manager told Ms Papanicolaou she was being ā€œkicked outā€ of the CuBar building regardless of the hearingā€™s outcome as it was being converted back to a private hotel bar.

Ms Papanicolaou, who only took over the venue last year, said complaints had been made ā€œfor yearsā€ to Genial Associates ā€“ the owners of West Beach Hotel.

She said: ā€œWeā€™re really disappointed because weā€™ve built the business up ourselves since taking over last year and discovered all these complaints that had been building up for years.ā€

Genial Associates declined to comment on the matter yesterday. A Brighton and Hove City Council spokeswoman said: ā€œThe panel has adjourned and will make a decision in the next five days.ā€
