ONE of Dame Vera Lynn’s biggest fans celebrated a major milestone with family and friends.

Maud Swanton celebrated her 100th birthday at the Adelaide Nursing Home in New Church Road, Hove, with her two sons, her daughter, and other friends, family and fellow residents on Wednesday.

Deputy mayor Debbie Cobb was at the party, too, which was a joint celebration as it also marked the 101st birthday of Mrs Swanton’s friend Ranji Dass.

Leanne Bishop, the home’s activity co-ordinator, helped stage the event for the long-time fan of the Forces’ Sweetheart Dame Vera, whose hits include We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover.

Mrs Bishop said: “Mrs Swanton has lived with us for four years and is a popular resident.

“She always enjoys listening to Vera Lynn’s music and loves watching Disney film The Lady and The Tramp. She’s entertained by the show and is a great animal lover.

“It was great to be able to celebrate this amazing milestone with her and we’re proud to have her as a resident. She was very pleased to receive her letter from the Queen.”

Councillor Cobb said: “The residents are obviously very well cared for at the home and so many of them are close to celebrating their 100th birthday or have surpassed it.”
