The Tour of Britain arrives in Sussex today after a pulsating week of racing.

More than a quarter of a million are expected to line the roads between Camberley in Surrey and Brighton seafront.

In between, the peloton will pass through some of the most picturesque countryside in the country and have to tackle fearsome climbs such as Ditchling Beacon, Beachy Head and Bear Road.

Home-grown favourites Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish will be the star attractions, but there is plenty of talent away from the two headline names.

International riders, including Frenchman Sylvain Chavanel, Pole Michal Kwiat-kowski and New Zealander Jack Bauer, have lit up the race with exciting attacks and more of the same is expected today.

WHERE TO WATCH

1: PETWORTH The town’s winding historic streets will provide a great place to view the race. Coming off the A272, the riders will have to kill their speed to negotiate the tight turns. Extra parking will be provided with stalls, bike repair shops and spinning classes.

2: HORSHAM The town will witness the first sprint competition in Albion Way and there will be a big screen showing all the action. There will also be street food and market stalls and a Cycling Village.

3: HAYWARDS HEATH The annual Town Day is being held today so expect all the usual rides, stalls and activities in Victoria Park and fireworks later in the evening. The race will pass along South Road on the northern tip of the park.

4: NEWICK Picturesque Newick will witness the second of the day’s sprint competitions. Riders will race along High Street to cross the line first outside The Bull pub.

5: HAILSHAM There will be a number of special events on the day. These will include a historic bike display, competitions and the screening of the race live in the town’s Corn Exchange. The town will also host the final intermediate sprint competition.

6: EASTBOURNE Events will be based in and around Western Lawns, where there will be a cycling show and display of historic bikes from 9am. There will be children’s races on a mini-circuit as well as a child-parent relay.

For the more energetic cyclists, there will be a hill-climb challenge from the Lawns up to Beachy Head and a watt bike competition hosted by Eastbourne Rovers Cycling Club.

From midday, a big screen will broadcast the race with live bands set to continue the entertainment with Motown, disco and swing classics to follow. The proms will be shown on the screen later, followed by fireworks.

7: SEAFORD The race will be shown on a big screen at the Salts Recreation ground and there will be a fun fair, cycle and spin classes hosted by Wave Leisure and rides with Cycle Seahaven and Sustrans.

8: NEWHAVEN A cycle-themed market will be held in High Street from 9am to 4pm with entertainment and a range of community stalls. Residents will then be able to take to the A259 and Lewes Road to watch the riders race through.

9: LEWES Harvey’s Depot in Pinwell Lane will be open from midday, where the race will be screened live.

10: DITCHLING BEACON While the professionals may not endure the same pain as weekend riders, the Beacon will provide a perfect place for the riders to stage a late attack.

Expect huge crowds to line the Beacon. This will be a fantastic opportunity to see the riders up close and struggling.
