Five cats are being treated for kidney failure after being poisoned.
Sussex Police say they have been made aware of several cases of stray cats being poisoned in the Kensington Road area in Crawley this week.
Officers say there is nothing at this stage to suggest the poisoning has been deliberate although more work is needed to identify the exact type of pesticide that is affecting the pets.
Local vets have reported five cases this week and although the poison is causing kidney failure and neuorological damage to the animals, none has so far died from their injuries.
Police are urging cat owners to be vigilant as the investigation continues.
