PARENTS have overwhelmingly supported plans to fine people responsible for “inconsiderate” parking.

Parents praised the initiative to crackdown on dangerous and illegal parking on verges and pavements near schools in Brighton and Hove.

The city council said it would ensure the safety of children and their parents on the school run.

The targeted schools will be Rudyard Kipling Primary School in Chalkland Rise, Woodingdean, Westdene Primary School in Bankside, Brighton, Aldrington Primary School in Eridge Road, Hove, and Hangleton Infant and Junior Schools in Dale View, Hove.

Parents commented on the story on The Argus website and Facebook page yesterday.

Parent Emma Da Silva said: “This is a brilliant idea. Why parents feel the need to persistently park right on the school gates is beyond me.

“I drive my son to school but park a little way from the school and walk the rest of the way, there is no need to park right on the school.

Russell Lockyer from Hove said: “Good. About time the wardens actually penalised people for bad parking.

Kell Pinker said: “I think something needs to be done about it. It’s so dangerous and some child is going to get really hurt one of these days.”

Pete West, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, welcomed the support for the scheme.

He said: “It is very important to have community support for what we are doing and obviously I hope that drivers will be more careful and considerate.”

The scheme is part of the council’s Safer Routes to School programme which will be rolled out next month.Vehicles caught pulled up in illegal positions will be issued with fines of up to £70.

During October council and police officers will be in the streets around schools where poor parking has been reported.
