BE quick if you fancy owning a pair of giant horse-head statues – these bronze pieces will not be around ‘furlong’.

The massive equine statues are expected to fetch tens of thousands of pounds each when they go on sale at Summers Place Auctions in Billingshurst next month.

The monumental heads, both measuring about 3.2m high and 3.7m wide, come from the famous Camden Lock market in London. The popular attraction used to be known for the Pickford horse stables and equine hospital until the Regent’s Canal stopped being used to transport goods in the early 1970s.

To commemorate the origins of the market, the owners commissioned a number of bronze pieces, mainly depicting horses and those working with them, to be installed around the market and in its halls in the 1990s.

Experts were not horsing around when they valued the two giant horse-head pieces at a cool £25,000 apiece.

The other 18 bronze and statue lots, include a life-size bronze stallion, standing at more than 2m high, which is estimated to fetch between £5,000 and £8,000.

James Rylands, auctioneer and co-director of Summers Place Auctions, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these wonderful statues in our next sale.

“The life-sized bronzes will no doubt appeal to anyone who loves horses but for many Camden fans, this could also be an opportunity to own a little bit of Camden Lock’s history and bring back great memories of many visits to the market.”

The auction takes place at the auction house’s Sculpture and Design for the House and Garden live sale on October 21. People can view the lots from October 17 to October 20, from 10am to 4pm. The auction house is at The Walled Garden in Billingshurst.
