A SPORTS shop has said it will continue to stock a novelty golf tee, despite complaints from a customer that they advocate violence against women.

Stephanie Davies-Arai said she was emotionally affected by seeing the tees at Inter Sport in Cliffe High Street, Lewes, where golfers place their ball on the shoulders of a naked woman before teeing off.

Ms Davies-Arai said that the tees were a “nasty” joke around violence towards women.

She said: “Seeing them in real life, it was shocking. They are really horrible, nude women.

“I spoke to the store manager and I was actually upset. It’s basically saying that knocking the head off a woman is a joke, something that is really funny.

“There is something very nasty behind them.”

The Inter Sport store owner, who did not wish to be named, said he had moved the product in the shop following the complaint but would continue to stock the novelty tees.

He said: “We have stocked these for about ten years as a novelty item which is bought by a lot of wives for their husbands at Christmas time.

“A regular customer took offence to them 18 months ago so we took them off prominent display and put them behind some balls.

“They used to sell really well but we don’t sell many now because of where we moved them to.

“We are not going to take them off display. We’ve only had two complaints in ten years.

“If we had regular complaints or the company withdrew them, then we would respond.”
