The arrest of a suspected burglar has prompted the police  to highlight the value of community vigilance.

Someone reported seeing a man trying doors in Alfred Road, Hastings, thought it seemed suspicious and phoned police.

Officers discovered a burglary nearby and arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of committing the offence. He has been bailed until Tuesday, 21 October, while enquiries continue.

Inspector Chris Veale said: "What is suspicious behaviour? In its most basic form it is someone doing something seen as being out of the ordinary.

"This could be someone randomly trying car doors, someone loitering for no good reason or even items being loaded into a van late at night. "I would urge anyone seeing anything they consider suspicious to call police and let us know. Officers can then decide whether to investigate.

Always remember that your call might prevent someone from becoming a victim of crime."

If a crime is thought to be imminent or in progress, dial 999. Less urgent information can be emailed to 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or reported by phone on 101.

They said please do not use social media to report suspicious activity.
