POSTCARDS, posters and vintage telephone books were just some of the lots on offer at a special retro auction of all things Brighton and Sussex.

Enthusiasts of vintage items packed into St Leonard’s Church Hall in Hove to bid on a host of items from the county’s past on Wednesday night.

Bits and bobs included an more than 80-year-old Pike’s telephone directory listing every street in Brighton and Hove, an authentic postcard from the 1920s picturing Western Road, a vintage Theatre Royal Brighton poster and admission tickets for the unveiling of the Old Steine war memorial in 1922.

An original postcard featuring the old Chain Pier fetched more than £90 and a book of 100 classic photos went for £98.

The auction was run by Andy Garth, owner of Brighton and Hove Stuff, and Robert Jeeves, of the Sussex Postcard Club and owner of Step Back in Time.

Mr Garth said the event went “incredibly well”, adding “with more than 80 people turning up at this auction, it shows there is more of a demand than ever for all things Brighton-based”.

He added: “Due to the success of this auction, we aim to put up another one before Christmas and similar to last night’s format. We welcome any items with a nostalgic spin.”

Mr Garth is appealing for anyone to come forward with more retro items, such as gig posters and old copies of The Argus and Brighton and Hove Gazette.

No date has been set for the next auction but it is expected to run in the last week of November or first week of December.

Mr Garth’s shop specialises in county memorabilia and features a wealth of postcards, posters and even pieces of the old Brighton Railway Station.
