For the first few years of the Second World War, I was employed by Denman & Son, 27 Queen's Road, Brighton, the architects responsible for the design of the proposed new town hall.
I am sure the artist's impression featured was by Sussex artist Charles Knight, who lived in Ditchling.
He taught at Brighton Art College and from time to time illustrated building designs of Denman & Son and other architects.
Building of the town hall commenced around 1938- 39 by the appointed contractor Messrs Bainbridge of Eastbourne, with part of the basement located on the west side of the south end of Market Street, next to the old Floral Hall and behind 26-30 King's Road, later the offices of the Borough Engineer & Surveyor.
Construction ceased at the outbreak of war. Part of the basement was converted to a decontamination unit and the structure was used for various purposes for some years including, I think, as offices for the police.
I assume the building, faced in stone, was later demolished during redevelopment of the area.
