Dog mess is being flagged up by a disgusted resident.

Paul Davidson was so fed up with dog’s fouling on the grass outside his flat in Brighton he decided to show how bad the problem is.

Residents spotted the flags appearing on the grass on the corner of Upper Bedford Street and Upper St James’s Street on Sunday. By yesterday afternoon, there were more than 100.

The 58-year-old said he was frequently shouted at when he told people to clear up the mess from the grassy area outside Hampshire Court.

“It’s just disgusting,” he said. I just want to say to people ‘for God’s sake we live here’.”

The green is particularly important to Mr Davidson because it is often the only outside space he can get to between dialysis treatment for kidney disease.

He said: “It doesn’t stop me from standing up for things like this – and I’ve got good support from the community with people saying ‘well done’ as they go past.

“It’s about keeping the place clean. We have one bit of grass in a concrete jungle and they are destroying it all.”

Mr Davidson, who is now on the committee for the Hampshire Court residents’ association, said he spoke to the dog warden about the problem before he came up with the idea.

He said: “The amount of support I’ve had is really good.

“I never expected it to snowball like this.”

Residents said the idea was a funny way of making an important point.

Charlie Jones, 47, said: “The flags just suddenly appeared. It’s hilarious. But it’s the only green space for miles.”

A Brighton and Hove City Council spokesman said: “We helped a resident find them on eBay but we didn’t put them up.

“It’s a way of pricking the conscience of dog walkers and getting them to act more responsibly.

“It’s very hard to secure prosecutions unless we have witnesses coming forward with a good way of identifying the culprit.
