A HEAD-ON crash on a busy main road left a woman having to be air-lifted to hospital.

The accident, involving a black Land Rover discovery and a blue Mazda hatchback, happened on the A29 Bury Hill near Arundel just before 8.30am today.

The female driver of the Land Rover came off lightly but the Mazda driver was trapped and suffered serious leg and pelvic injuries.

Fire crews from Littlehampton and Chichester had to use hydraulic rescue gear to cut her out of her car.

She was then flown to St George's Hospital in Tooting by the Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance.

The collision occurred just south of Turners Garage.

The A29 was closed in both directions while emergency services worked at the scene and has not yet re-opened.

Sergeant Anthony Crisp, of the Sussex Road Policing Unit, Arundel, said: “We are keen to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who saw either of the vehicles involved being driven prior to the collision.”

Anyone with information is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 266 of 1/10.
