THE revival of a 1920s dance has got everybody in a flapper after an eye-catching new video to promote Brighton and Hove became an internet sensation.

More than 80 dancers aged from five to 80 filmed themselves doing the Charleston in 40 places across the city.

The creators of the video, which has had more than 30,000 views on YouTube, were surprised by the interest in the film and the revived dance moves.

They credit the rising interest in 1920s lifestyle and Strictly Come Dancing for boosting the popularity of the dance.

The film was the brainchild of Elena Collins and Fiona Ring.

The women met 18 months ago when 26-year-old event organiser Elena and 41-year-old freelance video editor and college lecturer Fiona were approached to create a one-off Charleston event.

The creative partnership bloomed and they decided to create a Brighton version of the global I Charleston phenomena, which began in France in 2010.

Dance groups Streetfunk and Live Love Hoop and the project South East Dance all got involved.

One of the showpiece shots in the video is 60 dancers in Pavilion Gardens which was organised through Facebook.

The council was so impressed that the tourist body Visit Brighton featured it in its promotion Arts in the City.

The next dance class scheduled for November is already fully booked and talks are ongoing to put on another class to meet the demand.

Elena said: “I am delighted. I did not think it would be this big.

“We decided to do the project back in December but we didn’t even know if people would even come to the classes.

“But 25 people signed up and it escalated from there.

“It’s just a very funny dance. It’s easy to pick up, not complicated or technical like ballet and it appeals to all ages.”
