WORTHING Rugby Football Club’s under-11s are on fire this season after establishing themselves as one of the best 12 teams in the country.

Having been crowned Sussex champions for two years running, the squad travelled north to Farnham Royal RFC in Buckinghamshire to take part in the Land Rover Cup competition run by London Wasps.

The Sussex outfit outscored a determined Maidenhead team in the final by two tries to one to clinch the tournament.

Worthing conceded first and were put under a lot of pressure by Maidenhead, but some determined tackling and team effort kept them in the game.

Just as it seemed Maidenhead's pressure would get them a second try, they spilled the ball a couple of metres out from Worthing’s tryline and a great kick up-field by Jack Doorey-Palmer and a determined chase by Ethan Clarke levelled the scores with only minutes left on the clock.

From the restart Worthing were on the front foot and set up camp near the Maidenhead tryline. With the last play of the game, after several attacks, Worthing were given a second penalty as Maidenhead failed to retreat the required distance.

The ball was set up for Jack Doorey-Palmer who drove over for the winning score.

Earlier on in the day, the team won their three pool games against Hemel Hempstead, Oxford Harlequins and High Wycombe, scoring 19 tries without conceding.

In the quarter finals they eased past Henley Hurricanes by winning by five tries to zero Their first real challenge came against Reading Abbey in the semi final, which proved to be a stern test.

They conceded their first try of the day early in the game but responded when Leo Ravaudet went over to score to score the equaliser.

The final whistle sounded with the scores deadlocked, but due to their excellent tries for and against ratio earlier in the competition, Worthing were awarded the match and a place in the finals. The Under-11s will now be invited to take part in the Parade of Champions at Twickenham on May 30 at the Premiership Final.
