TONIGHT residents get the chance to question police chiefs.

Sussex Chief Constable Giles York, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne and Brighton and Hove divisional commander Nev Kemp are answering questions from the public at Hove Town Hall.

Questions can be asked on any topic but organisers at tonight’s event hope to cover anti-social behaviour, burglary, domestic abuse, sexual offences, public satisfaction in the police, protests and travellers.

Protest policing, police resources, animal rights, sexual assaults, hate crimes and the role of the PCC are among the issues that readers have been sending in questions about so far. Plenty more are expected from the audience tonight.

The event is the first in a series of Police and Crime Community Conversations Mrs Bourne will hold around Sussex over the next six months.

Katy Bourne is the first ever elected Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, elected by the public to set the police budget and hold the Sussex Police Chief Constable and the force to account.

This is designed to make Sussex Police answerable to the communities it serves.

As PCC, she aims to ensure community needs are met as effectively as possible, improving relationships with the public by trying to help build confidence and restoring trust.

She said the events will help “set the context for policing in Sussex” and provide an opportunity for residents to pose questions about topical issues directly.

The Argus group editor Michael Beard, who will be chairing the meeting, said readers had shown a great interest in police issues.

He welcomed the questions that had already been sent and said the evening will offer “a unique opportunity for residents to question the people responsible for policing about the issues that really matter to them”.

Any questions that are not answered on the night will be answered and published online, unless they contain personal information.

The Argus will also be blogging the event on our website.

There is still time to email questions and to attend the event.

Email newsdesk@theargus.co.uk or phone 01273 544 512. Everyone is welcome and the event is free. Space is limited so reserving a seat is recommended, online at www.eventbrite.co.uk

Doors open at 6pm and the event will finish at 7.45pm. Hove Town Hall is in Norton Rd, Hove, BN3 4AH.
