PLANS for the redevelopment of a historic lido have been revealed.

The blueprints for Saltdean Lido include creating a 25m pool as well as building beach huts and a beach volleyball court.

They were submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council last week and a decision is expected on them by December 8.

The Art Deco lido was built in 1937 and has been enjoyed by generations.

It was closed in 2010 and the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) has been battling to get it reopened ever since.

After a long-running struggle over the lease the group was handed the keys last year and subsequently hired architects Conran and Partners to bring the site back to life.

This application, which was published on the council website yesterday, marks a huge step forward in seeing the facility reopened to the public.

The documents reveal plans to remove the sub-dividing section between the two pools to create a single 25m pool.

The former paddling pool to the side of the main pool will also be refurbished and there will be new underwater lights installed.

The blueprints also show provisions for a new sand beach volleyball area to the east and a sand pit and children’s play area to west.

A picnic and sunbathing area will sit to the south in front of the pool.

There will also be a series of new buildings including portakabins and beach huts.

It is understood these will be temporary while funding is secured for the redevelopment of the main lido building.

In a letter to the council as part of the plans, Richard Mason, director of CIC, said: “As previously stated the funding for the main build is subject to a Heritage Lottery Fund application which is due to be submitted next week.

“This will provide us with the lions share for the funding required for the main refurbishment of the building.

“This will also be supplemented with the continuous fundraising efforts of the Saltdean Lido CIC and a Community Share Offer which we hope to be able to launch in the New Year.”

Members of the CIC have previously said they hope the lido will reopen for the summer of 2016.
