A GRADUATE who recorded a David Brent-style video of himself in an attempt to get hired has landed a top advertising job.

Will Bower, 21, contacted The Argus last month after filming a quirky video which he hoped would get him noticed in the competitive job market.

The high-flying student graduated from the University of Sussex in the summer with a 2:1 in Business and Management Studies.

But despite applying for numerous jobs, the Crawley man had been unable to secure work.

The amateur film maker decided to turn to fictional TV boss David Brent from The Office to help land him his dream role.

With the help of pals, he shot a short piece to camera in which he played the Ricky Gervais character.

He answered questions about his qualifications and spoke into the camera about why he should be hired.

Asked in the video why he is yet to get a job, he said: “Truth is I’ve been waiting, playing hard to get, as they say. Tip: let the companies come to you. Don’t go to the job. Naturally, gravitate, synergy.”

Just a couple of weeks after appearing in The Argus, Mr Bower received a message on LinkedIn from the boss of London advertising agency VCCP Media.

He said: “He messaged me and asked me to come in last Thursday.

“He gave me a tour of the office and talked about setting up a trial period.

“I started on Monday, I’m delighted. It is a great company and I’m really enjoying it.

“When I spoke to him he said he really liked the website and the video so I guess it worked.”

VCCP Media is one of the biggest and most successful companies of its kind in the UK.

Among its well known recent advertising campaigns include Compare The Meerkat, O2’s Be More Dog and the Coors Light adverts with Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Asked what his advice would be for other jobseekers, Mr Bower said: “I think if you’ve got an idea then just go for it.

“You need to think outside the box because it is very competitive, but you have nothing to lose.”
