Two journalists who studied at Brighton Journalist Works last year have been shortlisted for National Council for the Training of Journalist’s Excellence awards 2014.

Rosemary Cherrington was shortlisted for an award in the News Journalism category, and Patrick Widdess for Multimedia story/campaign of the year.

Miss Cherrington, 25, from Brighton, said: “It feels amazing to be shortlisted, there are so many brilliant journalism students out there that I couldn't quite believe they picked me.

“There are only three journalists selected for each category so there's a chance I could win, but I'm up against some very talented writers, it’s tough competition.”

Miss Cherrington, who now works at the Daily Telegraph, was selected for three news stories published in The Argus earlier this year.

These stories included a heroic mother who had lost her daughter to a brain tumour and had set up a charity ball, the introduction of female oriented PE lessons by senior schools in Brighton and Hove, and the increase of women at a local tattoo convention.

Mr Widdess, 35, from Cambridge, who now works as a copy-editor in Newport, was shortlisted for a creative blog he created called Musical Teeline, which helps students to practice shorthand by writing the lyrics of popular songs.

He said: “I'd had some positive feedback but I didn't expect this honour. If the judges like it as much as people who have used it I'm in with a chance of winning.”

The seven different awards highlight achievements in a number of categories from journalism students and trainees across the UK.

BBC sports presenter Dan Walker will announce the winners at the awards ceremony at Sheffield City Hall on Monday, November 27.

The winner of each award will then be invited to the Journalism Skills Conference gala dinner and awards ceremony as a guest of the NCTJ.
