CAROLINE Lucas has been named MP of the year at an awards ceremony which recognised work to help the LGBT community.

This evening at the PinkNews Awards, at Speaker’s House, the Brighton Pavilion MP pipped Crispin Blunt, Gloria De Piero, Mike Freer, Julian Huppert, to the post for the title of member of the year.

The announcement formed part of a gala event with other awards to celebrate the Peer of the Year, community group, marketing campaigns and lifetime achievement.

The event was attended by speakers including Benjamin Cohen, and Nicky Morgan, David Laws, Ed Balls, William Hague, Vince Cable, and Ed Miliband presented awards.

The awards were launched last year to celebrate the contributions of politicians, community groups and businesses involved in improving the lives of the LGBT community.

A spokesman for the event said: “We wanted to concentrate on the real progress that has been made, whether that has been the political leadership on issues, such as fighting for inclusive sex education in all schools or campaigning for a fairer blood donation system.”
