A Sussex driver is caught speeding or driving carelessly every 20 minutes, new figures have revealed.

Speeding and reckless drivers based in the county racked up fines worth up to £2.47 million in just 12 months.

The figures were compiled for the first time by Brake as the road safety charity launched a new campaign to coincide with national road safety week this week.

The charity, which released the stats in association with Specsavers and insurance firm RSA, called on road users to stop viewing users of other modes of transport as “competing tribes”.

The highest number of motoring fines were issued to motorists living in the BN2 and BN3 postcodes of Brighton and Hove at 963 and 940 through 2013.

In total Brighton and Hove motorists had 2,828 fines land on their doormats in just 12 months while Worthing-based car owners were fined on 1,450 occasions.

Across the whole of Sussex, the 24,696 fines accumulated would have boosted the exchequer by between £1.48 million and £2.47 million. The uncertainty is because speeding fines were increased from £60 to £100 in the middle of 2013.

There were just 353 careless driving fines issued across the county.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, said: “Instead of making our streets stressful, risky places, we’re asking people to look out for and protect each other.

“Ultimately, we’re all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes.”
