ANOTHER panel has broken on a £10 million footbridge, only weeks after it was revealed that vandalism was not the cause of five out of six previous breakages.

The seventh cracked glass panel on Adur Ferry Bridge in Shoreham has been reported to West Sussex County Council, which sent staff down to wrap the glass yesterday.

A report released earlier this month revealed that five out of the six previous breakages were due to the presence of nickel sulphide in the glass.

At the time, Pieter Montyn, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “It’s entirely possible that no further panels will smash because of this impurity.”

A council spokeswoman said the authority was investigating the cause but early indications seemed to show the glass impurity could again be at fault, although confirmation would not be available for a few days.

She added that it is not thought the recent drop in temperature was a factor.

The council is working with contractors on any further action to resolve the problem.
