An uninsured driver has been jailed for the death of his passenger after a head-on smash into another car.

Simon Graczyk crashed his Ford Fiesta into a Toyota Landcruiser on a sharp bend as he headed towards Southwater in Worthing Road on May 23, 2012.

The 28-year-old, who was not insured, was driving on the wrongs side of the road.

Peter Green, 44, the front seat passenger of the Fiesta, died at the scene. A 27-year-old passenger in the back seat of the Fiesta suffered severe head injuries that he may never fully recover from. The 44-year-old man in the Toyota suffered slight injuries.

Graczyk, of Eversfield, Southwater, pleaded not guilty to causing death by careless driving while uninsured at Lewes Crown Court but was convicted after a trial.

On November 14 he was sentenced to 22 months in prison and was banned from driving for 18 months.

Sergeant Alan Spicer, from Sussex Police's roads policing unit, said: "This collision occurred due to the reckless driving of Mr Graczyk.

"His actions resulted in the death of a loved father and the permanent injury of another. The sentence should serve as a warning that such behaviour is not acceptable on the road and can have devastating consequences."
