A MAN marked the first anniversary of his kidney transplant by taking part in a charity run.

Tom Lane, from Steyning, has raised thousands for the Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice through his efforts, The 39-year-old was among 1,100 other runners who took part in the 10km run in Littlehampton.

Mr Lane, a director of asset management at aviation company Avtrade, which is based in Sayers Common, set a fundraising target of £6,850 – enough to pay for one day of the hospice’s care.

However, his fundraising total has now reached £7,166, the highest total raised by any runner in the event.

Mr Lane, who has backed the hospice for several years, said: “I support Chestnut Tree House as it’s such a worthwhile charity and I’m always keen to do anything I can to help.

“I am lucky that I work in an industry where I have such generous colleagues and I’m very grateful to everyone who sponsored me to raise money for this fantastic cause.

“I’m not a serious runner. For the 10k I did a few months’ training and I have just started to train for the half marathon.

“As a local charity, you really get to see what a difference the money raised makes to the children and families they care for and support.

“To anyone thinking of getting involved, whether running or volunteering, I would encourage them to just give it a go – it’s been a great experience and lots of fun.”

The hospice, based near Arundel, cares for hundreds of life-limited children and their families across Sussex.

It is not part of the NHS and receives less than 8% from central government so it relies on the support of the community to keep its vital services going.

It costs more than £3 million a year to provide all its care services and families are never charged.
