A TEXTILE designer will throw open his front door to artists and visitors to raise money for a swimming pool.

Cushion creator Nigel Gray will open his house every weekend for a month in the run-up to Christmas to support the cause to fully restore the Saltdean Lido.

Mr Gray, who has lived at 75 Bannings Vale for eight years, is giving Brighton-based artists the chance to display their work in his home and visitors a chance to view them and tuck into refreshments.

It is the first time the event festive open house will take place and he also hopes to launch a Saltdean artist trail in May next year to encourage people to visit the area.

The 57-year-old said: “I am passionate about Saltdean and its thriving community and have always supported local events to help keep the area alive.

“I used to go to the gym at the Lido and think it is a great community asset.

“I have regularly supported the fundraising events and have previously opened up my workshop but this year I wanted to raise money for this cause and the idea escalated and we are opening the whole house.

“We have invited a selection of very talented artists and artisans to take part with hand crafted gifts on offer, including Saltdean Lido merchandise.

“As a new event, we have chosen to waiver exhibitors fees to give them an opportunity to display their work.”

Mayor Wayne Botting will officially open the event today at 3pm in a private viewing and Mr Gray’s home will be open to the public tomorrow and every weekend until December 14 from 11am to 6pm. Homemade cream teas will be on offer.

The house is a short walk from the major coastal bus routes, there is parking available outside, and it can be reached by foot over the Telscombe Tye or along the Undercliff walk.

Saltdean Lido is now leased to a community interest company which hopes to re-open the main pool next summer after it fell out of use.
