THE COUNTY’s top sports personalities have been recognised for their work on the courts, fields and gyms of Sussex.

A former athletics coach, a 15-year-old volunteer and a local swimming club were all winners at the Sussex Sports Awards, held at The Grand hotel, Brighton.

Now in its 12th year and organised by Active Sussex, the event welcomed back regular host, BBC Sussex DJ Danny Pike, who was joined by special guest, former freestyle and butterfly Olympic swimmer Mark Foster, who provided attendees with inspirational tales of his own sporting success.

Former Argus athletics reporter Reg Hook was named the BBC Sussex Unsung Hero of the Year. Reg has been a committee member of the Sussex Schools Athletics Association for more than 50 years.

Ashley Edwards scooped the Latest Sport Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

He helps organise eight local league teams across three divisions in the Brighton and District League. Sussex Tennis Under 12’s Girls won the Juice 107.2 Young Team of the Year Award after they won the AGEON Tennis National Finals.

The Club of the Year – the only category to go to the public vote – was Southwick-based Shiverers Swimming Club.

Sadie Mason MBE, Active Sussex chief executive, said: “I would like to congratulate all our winners and nominees on their wonderful achievements this year.

“The awards ceremony rewards quality, achievement, determination and commitment to those involved in sport across the county.

“Hearing their stories was truly inspirational and they are a credit to their sports and themselves.”
