A school is improving after it was placed in special measures earlier this year.

Ofsted inspectors praised the progress made by staff and students at Oakmeeds Community College following their two-day monitoring inspection this month.

After their visit on November 5 and 6, inspectors said students are making better progress than at the time of the previous inspection in January. They said the leaders of the college are now identifying students who need further support to make progress.

The report also concluded that the quality of teaching is improving and that many teachers are working in new and varied ways, which ensures that all students can progress and that more able students are challenged.

The report said students’ behaviour and conduct in lessons meant that classrooms were calm and orderly, so teachers could develop good learning.

Colin Taylor, headteacher at Oakmeeds, said: “I am delighted that Ofsted recognised the improvements that have been made at the college in recent months and the hard work and commitment of everyone involved when implementing the required changes.

“Students’ rates of progress and levels of achievement are clearly increasing and we expect these to be reflected in significantly improved GCSE examination results in summer 2015.

“In the meantime, we will continue to have a relentless approach when addressing the improvement agenda at the college.”

The provisional 2014 examination results show the proportion of students achieving five good GCSE grades, including English and maths, was higher than in 2013 and results in 16 subject areas rose.

Ofsted inspectors observed 23 lessons, looked at a range of students’ work and spoke with students informally at break and lunchtime.

They also found that attendance overall is above the national average and governors are ambitious for the college and keen to see rapid progress.

Chairman of governors David Fry said: “This is evidence of the great progress made by everyone at Oakmeeds, and I am confident we are on the right path towards the removal of special measures at the earliest opportunity.”
