An independent review is being carried out at a mental health hospital after concerns were raised about care.

Langley Green Hospital, in Crawley, will not be admitting new patients while the two-week investigation takes place.

The only exceptions will be crisis cases, including those people brought in to be kept in a “place of safety” by police.

Patients who would normally be admitted to the hospital will be sent to other units run by the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

However, if no beds are available they may have to go somewhere out of the county.

Earlier this year CQC inspectors branded the hospital as failing, saying it was not meeting standards regarding respecting and involving people who use services, their care and welfare and safeguarding them against abuse.

And the hospital did not meet all requirements on management of medicines, staffing, assessing and monitoring the quality of services and patient records.

Inspectors were told there was “little or no” occupational therapies provided on the ward, and patients became bored, which could cause frustration and aggression.

The monitoring of the use of seclusion and restraint were poor and not all staff had received current relevant training in relation to restraint or safeguarding, Inspectors found.

Patients are being kept informed about what is happening during the review and will also contribute to it.

In a joint statement, the partnership trust and the CCGS covering West Sussex said the quality and safety of care at the hospital is a priority.

They said: “The CCGs and partners will continue to work closely with the partnership trust to continue to make further improvements.

“The commissioners are keen to have all the beds and the hospital functioning normally as soon as we are assured the care provided at the hospital is consistently high quality and safe.

“The partnership trust has a robust action plan in place to address concerns and continue improving the standard of care specifically around documentation, care planning, physical health needs and management of complaints.

“The CCGs continue to monitor the situation closely through site visits and contract and performance discussions.“

An update on the review, which began on December 1, will be heard today at a meeting with all the organisations involved.
