A signal fault which caused delays on the trains this morning has been fixed.
Network Rail fixed the problem at Purley in South London shortly before 11am.
However, a spokesman said delays would continue due to a backlog.
Problems started this morning with a broken down train at Clapham Junction blocking services into London.
A spokesman for Southern, said: "We’d like to apologise to our passengers for the delays experienced during this morning’s peak.
"At approximately 1am this morning, the 00.35 Gatwick to Victoria train failed at East Croydon.
"Temporary repairs were made and the train set off only for the same problem to reoccur in the Selhurst area. The train failed again at Clapham Junction before being repaired sufficiently for it to be able to get to the Depot at Battersea."
The morning of delays comes just weeks before rail fares are set to be increased once more – on average by 2.2%.
