A pedestrian has now died after being hit by a lorry.
Two pedestrians were hit by a lorry in South Heighton at the junction of the B2109 Avis Road and A26 New Road.
A 35-year-old man from Newhaven died at the scene after the collision, which happened at 10am.
A 65-year-old man from Bishopstone has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.
Both men were employees of Paradise Park Garden Centre, which is just metres from the crash site.
The 65-year-old man was been airlifted to the Royal Sussex County Hospital with serious, but not thought to be life-threatening, injuries.
The driver of the red dropside DAF lorry, a man from Kent, was uninjured. He was driving south on the A26 when the incident occurred.
Emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called, shortly after the incident at 10.03am.
The A26 was closed in both directions between the A27 (Beddingham Roundabout, Beddingham) and A259 (South Heighton).
It has now been reopened.
