Two people were rescued from a bedroom fire and treated for smoke inhalation early this morning.

They were in a flat in High Street, Polegate, when the blaze broke out just before midnight on Christmas Eve.

Two fire crews from Hailsham and Eastbourne turned up and firefighters wearing breathing gear and carrying hose reels tackled the fire.

The rescued individuals were treated by ambulance paramedics at the scene.

Emergency services had departed by about 1am today.

Meanwhile, in West Sussex, firefighters squirted water up a chimney this morning to avert disaster at a house in Wisborough Green near Billingshurst.
