A POTENTIAL Christmas Day disaster was averted when firefighters tackled a chimney fire.

They squirted water up the chimney of a house in Wisborough Green near Billingshurst.

A retained fire crew from Billingshurst raced to an address in Durbans Road at 8am today.

They swept the chimney out and left 45 minutes later.

Meanwhile, in East Sussex, there was also a chimney fire in Burwash Road, Broad Oak at about the same time.

A crew from Heathfield used its chimney kit to put the flames out.
