Man to raise money for charity with cricketing book

Pete Langman, from Brighton, was diagnosed with the disease in January 2008 at the age of 40.

Determined to raise money for charity Parkinson’s UK, the now 47-year-old set out to play cricket at the oldest and most picturesque cricket grounds for a new coffee-table book.

He said: “The majority of the research I undertook for The Country House Cricketer was at the British Library and, where possible, the archive of the country houses and cricket clubs themselves.

“In addition I interviewed the players and took pictures on the morning of the game and on the Monday after each match.”

He travelled to grounds across the country, from Audley End in Essex to Arundel, Stourhead in Wiltshire and Sheffield Park.

But not only did he play a game at each, he also attempted to get a feel for the club, the atmosphere and surroundings.

He said: “I stayed at a local hostelry the night before and after each game. The pint after the game is truly part of the experience. I played two or three games a month throughout the season, reaching my target of 12 houses in September.

“My book will appeal to cricket enthusiasts and historians alike.

“I am delighted to announce that all the profits from the sale of each book will be donated to Parkinson’s UK, so the charity can continue with their vital research work to find a cure.”

The book features more than 180 colour pictures over 104 pages. The words detail the trials and tribulations of a Sunday cricketer and there is foreword by ex-England star Mark Butcher.

Paul Jackson-Clark, director of fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, thanked Mr Langman for his efforts.

He said: “I hope that cricket fans will pick up a copy of The Country House Cricketer, and by doing so, will be helping to improve the lives of the 127,000 people in the UK who are living with Parkinson’s.” The book is available to order online for £20.
