CAMPAIGNERS are calling for action on train delays, writes Jonathan Jones.

Prospective Conservative parliamentary candidate for Wealden Nus Ghani led a rally about the Uckfield train line at Crowborough.

The group set out from Uckfield Station on the delayed 09:34 service to meet Tory prospective candidate for Tonbridge Tom Tugendhat, who arrived on a late-running southbound service.

Miss Ghani said: “2015 started with commuters facing chaotic, delayed and cancelled services. Network Rail needs to invest in our local transport needs on the Uckfield Line.”

She said new carriages have been announced but there are still concerns over delivery.

Councillor Barry Marlowe, of Hailsham town council, also attended. He said: “We held the rally to make Southern Rail aware of problems and bring it to the attention of people.”

A spokesman for National Rail said: “Southern and Network Rail accept that performance on the Brighton main line and routes into London Bridge has not been good enough.

“Both companies are investing heavily in improving the reliability of trains and infrastructure.”

The service, which is still not running to its expected efficiency, was condemned on Twitter.

Georgie Riddick tweeted: “Once again an Uckfield train has been delayed. This happens to a third of journeys.”

Emma Easterbrook tweeted: “After cutting peak services on the Uckfield line last night, Southern Rail have cancelled the 7.08 and the next train is short-formed.”
