OFF-LICENCES have been caught selling alcohol to children.

Licensing officers tested 11 pubs and off-licences on Thursday [January 15] and three served young volunteers working for police.

Staff at Star Convenience Store and News Corner, both in Chapel Road, Worthing, and at Mini Market in Wick Parade, Littlehampton, sold alcohol to the children. The workers involved at Star Convenience Store and at Mini Market were given £90 fixed penalty notices.

Officers are investigating what action should be taken against the member of staff at News Corner.

Staff in Chapel News, Chapel Road, Worthing Food Centre, in South Street, Bar 42, in Marine Parade, and The Broadwater, in Broadwater Street West, all in Worthing, as well as Grande Wines, in Middleton Road, Sibels Mini Market, in Hawthorne Road, and One Stop in Durston Drive, all in Bognor Regis, and an off-licence in Wick Street, Littlehampton, challenged the youngsters and refused to serve them.

Sergeant Mike Balmer said: "Even though three premises failed, I am pleased that eight premises have prevented the sale of alcohol to the volunteer by adhering to the mandatory condition, that they must request photographic proof of the buyer's age."

Anyone with information about children purchasing alcohol should call 101 and extension 581447 or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk.
