A WOMAN got so drunk at a Christening she lost her bearings and ended up getting her foot stuck in a cattle grid at a railway station.

Michelle Lorraine Mis spent the afternoon drinking red wine at a christening and, as she tried to walk home, ended up trespassing at Lancing Station. Police were called when she was spotted on the tracks.

Martina Sherlock, prosecuting, told Worthing Magistrates’ Court officers found the 48-year-old slumped on the cattle grid in an “unresponsive state”.

Ms Sherlock added that she had never dealt with a case of someone being in a state of intoxication on a railway and that Mis was incoherent when officers arrested her at 6.40pm on Sunday, November 30.

Ms Sherlock told the court how staff had seen the defendant climbing a barrier before becoming stuck.

Mark Rogers, defending, said: “It can be a serious offence [trespassing on the railway], but I would suggest this is not one of those occasions.

“There were no disruptions, no cancellations.

“She had gone to a christening and had far too much red wine.

“She was walking in a straight line and somehow managed to end up there.”

Mis, of Crescent Road, Worthing, pleaded guilty to trespassing on a railway and admitted being drunk on a railway belonging to Southern. Sentencing, magistrate Tessa Balfour said: “For these offences we are going to give you a fine and a conditional discharge.

“This will be hanging over you for 12 months and, if you commit another offence in that time, it will be taken much, much more seriously when you appear in court.”

Mis was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Mis told the magistrate she could not make any payments so the money will be deducted from her benefits.
