VOLUNTEERS have been working hard to provide the perfect home for butterflies.

National Trust rangers and volunteers from the South Downs team have been digging to clear a south-east facing bank at Blackcap near Lewes to create a butterfly bank.

Bramble and sprawling hedgerow have been cut away to encourage grassland plants to move in such as kidney vetch and hound’s tongue and nightshade to border the hedgerow to encourage the growth of food plants for the 28 butterflies found at the site.

The National Trust is leading a walk at Blackcap in the summer led by experts, for more information visit nationaltrust.org.uk/events.
