A HOSPICE charity has improved its equipment thanks to a grant of nearly £10,000 from the charitable wing of The Argus’ parent company.

The Martlets Hospice of Hove has spent its £9,140 grant from the Gannett Foundation on two new specialist mattresses for in-patients.

A charity spokesman called it a “fantastic contribution to providing the best specialist equipment for terminally ill patients”.

Dawn Sweeney, managing director of Newsquest Sussex, said: “We were delighted that The Martlets was chosen to be the beneficiary of the Gannett Foundation.”

She joined Martlets chief executive Imelda Glackin at the hospice in Wayfield Avenue, Hove, to celebrate.

The Martlets gives hospice care to people from Brighton and Hove both at home and as in-patients.

Its services are free yet it is not part of the NHS and it needs millions a year.

The Gannett Foundation is a corporate foundation sponsored by Gannett Co Inc, which supports non-profit making activities in the communities where Gannett works.
