Every so often you hear a voice that transports you to another time and place; you’re not sure quite when or where, but you know you want to stay awhile.

Bo Lucas, lead singer of young Brighton folk duo Lucas & King, had such a voice.

The band’s gentle blend of rootsy Americana and minimalist folk combined velvet-smooth vocals with a charismatic fragility - to spine-tingling effect.

Accomplished guitarist, harmony vocalist and co-writer Hayleigh King swapped her acoustic for a slide guitar halfway through the set, creating a dreamy backdrop to finely crafted, multi-faceted songs which floated in the air.

Having supported Ray Davies at London’s Festival Hall for a number of gigs last year the duo are now focusing on building a following in London and their home town of Brighton, with a slew of upcoming dates and even a feted Glastonbury slot in the bag.

Highlights of the set at the Brunswick included the assured track Black And White Cat, and the really rather wonderful How To Be, which displayed a pleasing maturity for such young musicians.

Lucas’s star quality shone throughout, and an endearingly self-deprecating bit of banter between songs clinched it for the increasingly appreciative audience. Spellbinding.
