COMPLAINTS have been made about the 50 Shades of Grey themed display in the window of Ann Summers in Taunton, deeming it “damaging for our children.”

The County Gazette received the anonymous complaint about a poster of a woman in a topless lingerie body suit, with her nipples covered only with sequins, whilst holding a whip and kneeling over a man in handcuffs.

The complaint read: “I'm not against Ann Summers, what they sell is up to them.

“What I'm against is the public NOT being given a choice in having erotic images shoved in their faces.”

We asked our social media users whether they thought this was offensive.

Olivia Solomons wrote: “Call me a prude, but I think it’s a bit inappropriate right smack bang in the middle of town where children are walking past all the time. A bit more subtlety perhaps?”

Paul Bryant said: “[The display] is no different to any advert for underwear so no, I don’t find it offensive.”

Teri Fenton wrote: “It’s not really nice for a child to be seeing. I know I wouldn’t want my son look at it at his age.”

Melissa Tooze said: “It’s not offensive at all. I am a mum to three young children and they don’t pay any attention to shop windows. It’s no different to any of their other displays.”

A statement from Ann Summers claimed that the brand “carefully considers every window display” before giving it the go-ahead.

An Ann Summers spokesperson said: “As with any of our window campaigns, it is not our intention to cause offence.

“However, we feel our latest campaign portrays a positive message to our customers as it empowers and encourages them to look and feel sexually confident.

“At all times we value our customers, and the public’s, opinions and strive to achieve the right balance for satisfying both.”
