CAMPAIGNERS battling to reopen a historical theatre as a live performance venue have launched a new fundraising campaign.

Our Brighton Hippodrome campaigners are looking to raise £25,000 to allow them to develop “full architectural plans” and “visualisations” for the benefit of the public and potential partners.

Campaign volunteers hope to build on an initial study and draft business plan already drawn up which they say outlines how the building can be restored and operated as a profitable theatre.

Plans to convert the grade II* listed historic venue in Middle Street into an eight-screen cinema with restaurants and shops were granted last year but appear to have fallen through after operators Vue walked away from the project.

A petition launched earlier this month calling on Brighton and Hove City Council to carry out any necessary urgent repairs on the building and back their campaign for a live performance venue has received more than 4,000 signatures.

The future of the venue will be discussed at a council meeting next month.
