A Sussex choir has been selected to perform with the star-studded cast of a touring musical.

The 28 singers from the Archway Group choir will join the musical Godspell, a rock musical based on the gospels, when it comes to the Brighton Dome.

The professional cast includes Jade Ewen, a singer with the Sugababes, Leanne Jarvis, a contestant on the BBC’s The Voice and X Factor runner-up Andy Abraham.

Jane Reeves, who leads the choir, said: “We’re all absolutely delighted to be performing. Given the number of applicants it really is exciting for us.”

Jane, who teaches five choirs in Seaford and Eastbourne, said choosing the singers was difficult, but she’s very pleased with the group.

She said: “I teach more than 200 choir members and I know them all pretty well.”

The Archway Group choirs have previously performed at Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre and Brighton Hippodrome.

The choir, which will be singing and dancing for the show, expect to begin rehearsals on March 8, in preparation for their performance on April 26.

Jane is already familiar with the musical, which was her mother’s favourite show, and the songs were regularly played during her childhood.

She said: “Now that we have received the music and choreography we know that it will be one of the most challenging things we have done.”

Local choirs from all over the country have been picked to perform in the show when it comes to their area.

Godspell is a modern retelling of the gospels, involving parables from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Jesus Christ recruits followers and teaches them a range of moral and spiritual lessons through song and dance, before he is betrayed by Judas and is eventually crucified.

As well as the show at the Dome in April, Jane says the choir will be singing at other performances.
