A man and a baby remain critically ill in hospital after a fire in a nail bar.

Emergency services were called to Hollywood Nails in High Street, Hailsham, at 5.17pm on Wednesday, where the man and baby, along with a woman were all found with burns following a fire in the property, which had been extinguished.

All three were initially taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with the baby, a boy aged five months, being transferred to the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital in Brighton before being moved to a specialist burns unit at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

He is described as critically ill with life-changing injuries, but has shown some improvement overnight.

The man has been transferred to the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead where he is being treated for life-threatening burn injuries. The woman remains in hospital in Brighton with serious injuries.

Detective Inspector Andy Harbour said: "We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this distressing incident and we are working with colleagues from the fire service and specialist forensic investigators to piece together exactly what happened.

"Understandably, this has attracted a lot of interest locally, but I would like to reassure people that this incident was confined to these three people who are all known to each other. There has also been speculation about their injuries, but we are confident that these were caused by a short-lived fire.

"If anyone has any information about the incident, please email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting Operation Arizona."
