Despite their low profile over recent years, the rock foursome originally from Glastonbury have been quietly touring on and off, either as Reef or in their other incarnation as the more reflective and mellow acoustic duo StringerBessant.

The gig at the Concorde 2 – their first musical return to Brighton for 12 years - was anything but mellow, with a chest-vibrating bass that shook the foundations and an even harder rocky edge than when they first burst onto the scene in the 1990s with Glow.

Three new tracks went down well with an obviously appreciative (some might say adoring) audience, as did a new guitarist playing his first gig with the band.

While unsurprisingly the most raucous cheers were reserved for best known tracks such as Place Your Hands, Come Back Brighter and Good Feeling - all of which sounded as solid as they did first time around - contemplative track Consideration allowed a brief, welcome, slowing in pace.

With vocals at times bringing to mind Robert Plant, and full-length beards sported by vocalist Gary Stringer and bass player Jack Bessant, the gig will be remembered for its unashamedly 1970s heavy rock vibe.

Headbanging never felt so good.
